There were two chiefs in the Karankawa tribe at any one point in time.  One was the peace chief, and the other was the war chief.  The peace chiefs' job was to keep peace and order in their tribe.  He also had to encourage people to move from one settlement to the next.  The war chiefs' job was to help protect them all if someone comes to attack, and also help prepare the men for war.  The War chief was the oldest son of the peace chief.
